Portals of Inspiration: Creativity
Being creative is a wonderful way to express yourself, explore new ideas, and find joy in the process. Joy doesn’t just land upon us. It comes from within and we allow it in. Being creative is a great thing to do any time of year and the holidays can add some fun ideas for gifts or get-togethers too.
Here are some ways to tap into your creativity:
1. Engage in Artistic Activities: Explore various artistic activities such as painting, drawing, sculpting, or photography. Whether it is online, with an app, or organic, play with different techniques to discover what resonates with you. LIfe is not a contest and everything doesn’t need to judged by your inner judges or saboteurs. The point is to have fun and let the energy flow!
2. Try Writing or Journaling: Writing can be a powerful outlet for creativity. Start a journal to express your thoughts and feelings, or try your hand at creative writing, such as poetry or short stories. Read some poetry out loud. Make cards for a few special friends.
3. Explore Music and Dance: Play a musical instrument, sing, or dance to your favorite tunes. Music and movement can ignite your creative spirit and provide a means of self-expression. Remember, it is not about how you sound when you are playing for fun.
If you are the practical sort who likes to accomplish something you can use then this may be a good one:
4. Experiment with Crafts and DIY Projects: Engage in crafts and DIY projects that allow you to create something with your hands. This could include knitting, sewing, woodworking, or even upcycling old items into something new. A table or dresser redone to uplift a room?
5. Cook or Bake: Get creative in the kitchen by trying out new recipes or experimenting with flavors and ingredients. Cooking and baking can be a delicious and artistic way to express yourself. I’ve heard many people share they relax and unwind when they are stressed by baking something yummy. Bake and pack up something yummy for gifts.
6. Take Up a New Hobby: Explore new hobbies that pique your interest. This could be anything from gardening, pottery, or even learning a new language. The act of learning and trying something new can spark creativity. A new plant for the house with a nice pot? Remember to talk to your plant and send it good vibes!
7. Surround Yourself with Inspiration: Create an environment that inspires you. Fill your space with artwork, books, or objects that ignite your imagination and reflect your personal style. Choose to highlight with colors you associate as uplifting.
Perfect time of year for this: How many of us made popcorn or paper decorations for a tree? Make a dough you can bake and shellac to hang as ornaments. Make antipasto with a friend (s) to give away as gifts or split between you all.
8. Collaborate with Others: Engage in collaborative projects or join creative communities where you can share ideas and collaborate with like-minded individuals. Working with others can bring fresh perspectives and inspire new creative directions. Strike up conversations that bring other points of view.
9. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Push yourself to try new things and step outside your comfort zone. Embrace the unknown and be open to taking risks. This can lead to exciting and unexpected creative breakthroughs.
10. Embrace Mindfulness and Playfulness: Allow yourself to be present in the moment and approach your creative endeavors with a sense of playfulness. Let go of expectations and judgments, and simply enjoy the process of creating.
Remember, creativity is a personal journey, so don’t be afraid to explore different avenues and find what resonates with you. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process of expressing yourself creatively. Going for a walk can be using your mind creatively when you observe the creativity of Mother Nature. We can ruin the creative journey when we self-criticize (That panel of judges that needs to be silent sometimes!) Cultivating joy and fun are worthwhile endeavors to practice. Whatever you choose, remember to observe your thoughts, fill your cup with love, and savor moments. One day, it is the moment we will remember most.
Much love,
